Because high blood sugar levels can cause a buildup of plaque in the blood vessels, people with type 2 diabetes are at an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, which encompasses narrowed or blocked arteries and structural heart disease, as well as heart attacks and strokes. But for some of those people, Eli Lilly’s prescription medication JARDIANCE —by helping to eliminate a degree of excess sugar through urination—can both lower A1C levels (a blood sugar level averaged over a patient’s most recent three months) and minimize cardiovascular risks.

In a three-year clinical trial of adults with type 2 diabetes and heart disease—who were already taking common type 2 diabetes medications as well as heart medications—Lilly scientists found JARDIANCE significantly reduced the risk of cardiovascular disease-related death. And in a 24-week study, JARDIANCE, along with diet and exercise, was found to help type 2 diabetics reach a desirable A1C level of less than 7%; as well as reducing the fasting blood sugar levels of those taking JARDIANCE alone by an average of 19 or 25 points.
